In the 19th Century Annesley House needed to accommodate a large number of live-in staff to keep Dr Brewer and his family in the genteel manner to which they were accustomed. These maids, cooks and general help were mostly young women from the surrounding district and were the reason the Doctor’s medical practice and household ran smoothly and successfully. The ‘House Keeper’s Cottage’ at the rear of the property was where these staff had their accommodation under the watchful eye of the first housekeeper of Annesley House, Ms Wadmore. Ms Wadmore not only filled the role of mother figure and mentor for these young women, she was also in charge of the overall running of Annesley House. By all accounts, a formidable woman indeed!
The House Keeper’s Cottage was built at the rear of the property and has a distinctly different feel to the rest of the mansion. With a little imagination it is possible to picture the two bedroom cottage filled with noise and laughter as the young maids relax after a hard day’s work or cook their evening meal in the large fireplace. Indeed, the cottage still retains the original cooking fireplace, sink and flagstones. These flagstones have noticeable grooves worn into them by the countless feet that have trod over them through the years.
