The story thus far
We are proud of the unique story of Annesley house and Portland. Please take a moment to read the following and you will see why. Who knows you may even wish to become part of the story!

Portland
Portland is a picturesque coastal town located in the South West of Victoria, Australia. It abounds in natural attractions such as pristine beaches, national parks, historical buildings to name but a few. So far it has managed to avoid the "tourist theme park" feel that many coastal towns have succumbed to.

Dr Brewer
Annesley was built in 1878 as the residence and surgery of Dr Brewer. Extract from "Portland Guardian" Sept 27, 1879 TOWN IMPROVENTS"...we cannot omit noticing that of Dr Brewer. It is one of the finest that a private gentleman in a country district need desire".

Dr Brewer was both “Medical Officer” in charge of the local hospital & Mayor. He was born in an era when you used your wealth to impress. Annesley was constructed to impress. We are sure Dr Brewer would be suitably impressed by our three bedroom apartment that bares his name.

Rosalie’s Retreat
Dr Brewer had but one child a daughter "Rosalie" who died without producing an heir. The rooms in which she lived have been remodeled into an apartment "Rosalie's retreat". It is not difficult to imagine a young lady sitting in Rosalie's retreat glancing out at St Stephen's church or to sea searching for a suitor who alas never came.

Captain’s Quarters
In the late 1800s Portland was a busy port & business centre. A man of Dr Brewer’s station would have been called upon to "receive" Captain's whilst their ship was in Port. We have remodelled the rooms now known as the Captain's Quarters to reflect the eceletic tastes of sea going gentlemen of the era.

Wadmore Sisters (Honeymoon Suite)
In the early 1900s Annesley passed to the Wadmore sisters (Well known for their match making abilities). The Wadmore sisters quickly turned it into a guesthouse. Annesley became an instant hit with people of the Western Districts of Victoria.

The main bedroom of the house has been remodeled into our “Honeymoon Suite”. We thought it was only fitting that it bare the name of these enterprising sisters.

Baytree & Mrs Luers
In the 1940s Annesley passed to Mrs Luers who had three great loves in life: playing the piano, the guests that passed through Annesley & tending the gardens of Annesley. (Mrs Luers was owner of Annesley until 2004).

We think it is only fitting that the apartment which is draped by the baytree be named in her honour.

Grande & current owners
In 2004 we (the current owners) purchased Annesley our “Grand” undertaking. Our objective was to restore Annesley to it's former glory whilst allowing the fabric of Annesley itself tell the story of those that have lived & loved within its walls.

The room which is now known as “the Grande” was the room in which Dr Brewer received his distinguished guests. In an era when impressions always counted this room was meant to impress. Restored with this in mind we are sure you will be suitably impressed!

For those small functions or meetings when impressions do count “the Grande” is ideal.

You & the Annesley story
True to the original aim to provide the “finest” accommodation on offer. Annesley is now fully restored & remodeled into five “superior” serviced apartments and the “Grande” meeting/function room. Many of the fixtures and furnishings used are unique to Annesley House.

We always endeavour to price our superior apartments in a releastic manner. In so doing we hope that the story will continue and you will add your own memories.

So why not join us as the story continues!
